Sean P. Clancy was recently a featured speaker at the 25th Annual Advanced Estate Planning Institute, which was held in Clayton, Missouri on June 26, 2013. His presentation on “Advanced Tax Planning with Trusts” focused on recent tax law changes under the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. The presentation covered strategies for dealing with the new 3.8% Medicare surtax on net investment income for estates, trusts, and individuals. The new Medicare surtax took effect on January 1, 2013. His presentation included possible legislative changes for several common estate planning techniques for wealthy individuals, including grantor retained annuity trusts (GRAT(s)), intentionally defective grantor trusts, insurance trusts, and planning for closely held businesses.
